Janice Ramsey (DOWNTOWN)

Janice Ramsey was born on April 7, 1938, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the union of Theophilus and Marjorie Smith. She was the first born of this union before welcoming her three younger siblings, Lois Rowe, Valerie Johnson, and Gerald Smith. Janice attended Louisville Public Schools and Jefferson County Community College. After completing her education, Janice worked in the hospitality and service industry for most of her adult life. Janice was active in her community as an advocate for equal rights and participated in multiple marches and demonstrations in support of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. Janice was blessed with four children, De'Ondrea, Derek, Tony and Pablo. In December of 1975 Janice married the love of her life, Herman Lee Ramsey, to whom she remained married until his death in 1992. Janice was a woman of God as she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early in her life. She was committed to service in the church. At her first church home, First Timothy Baptist Church, she held many roles. She later joined St. Stephen Church, where she was also heavily involved and known for her culinary skills, particularly her infamous caramel chocolate cake. Janice found great joy and satisfaction in serving on the St. Stephen Pastor’s Action Committee. Janice's generous heart led her to open her home and serve as a foster parent to children for over 25 years, many of whom she created a bond that lasted a lifetime. Janice was a social butterfly and participated in many social organizations, including the Diamond and Pearls Red Hatters Organization and the River City Travel Club, among others. Janice loved travel and the arts. Her favorite pastimes included attending Broadway performances and going on cruises. Those left to cherish her memories are her children, De’Ondrea Armstead, Tony (Monica) Bowman, Pablo (JoAnn) Fields; her sister, Valerie Johnson; her grandchildren, Tony Bowman, Jr., Victoria (Keith) Taylor, Nicholas Davis, EJ (Adele) Armstead, Gabrielle Fields, Justin Fields, Jaiden Fields, Jessica Fields; her nephews and nieces, Daymon Rowe, George Embers Jr., JaRese Daniels, Gerald Smith Jr., Nicole Harriston; her best friend, Mildred Sattlefield; as well as great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. In the early morning of January 1, 2024, Janice was reunited in heaven with her beloved husband Herman Lee Ramsey, her sister Lois Rowe, her son Derek Bowman, her granddaughter Kennedy Fields, her parents, and other lovecaring, and determined. She was a Phenomenal Woman indeed.d ones. Janice was a safe harbor to her family and many others. She could always be counted on to provide a warm meal, a clean bed, words of wisdom, and a comcaring, and determined. She was a Phenomenal Woman indeed.forting hug. Janice Ramsey leaves a legacy of hard work, commitment to family, and service to others. She enriched the lives of all who knew her. She was sassy, strong, exceedingly generous, caring, and determined. She was a Phenomenal Woman indeed. Visitation: 5pm-7pm Thursday, January 11, 2024 at A.D. Porter & Sons, 1300 W. Chestnut St. Funeral: 12pm Friday, January 12, 2024, at St. Stephen Church, 1018 S. 15th St. Burial: Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.
