Phillip B. Bates

Phillip B. Bates was the son of Rev. E.W. and Alfrena Christy Bates both deceased. He entered this life June 1, 1948, in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Surrounded by his loving family he passed from this life into eternal life on August 6th, 2022. He was married to Syverta L. Bates on August 13,1977. They are celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary on this day Saturday August 13, 2022.To this union they had one daughter, Alisha J. Bates, one precious granddaughter Nevaeh A. Bates and one stepson Terry D. Staples. Also survived by his sisters Phyllis Bates Pinkston, Sharon L. Bates, Rachelle C. Bates and Teresa Bates Barclay (Stan), a host of cousins, nieces, great nieces, great great nieces and nephews and friends. At a young age he professed his life to Christ and was baptized at the old church on Illinois Avenue. He was a member of First Trinity Missionary Baptist. Later in life he attended services at St. Stephen Church Southern Indiana Campus. He graduated from Jeffersonville High School class of 1966. He attended Hanover College and Indiana University Southeast. He retired from the City of Jeffersonville Department of Redevelopment and Housing Authority in 2012 were he held various positions, Relocation Specialist, Director of Relocation and Social Services, Housing Manager, Deputy Director and most recently as the Executive Director of Jeffersonville Housing Authority. He was a proven outstanding leader and showed his dedication, love for his community by working tirelessly with youth as a coach and mentor on countless civic and professional committees, distinguished awards and boards. Jeffersonville GRC Little League Baseball, Jeffersonville Youth Football League, Clark County NAACP, Jeffersonville Travel Club, Southern Indiana Mental Health Center, Leadership Clark County Program, United Negro College Fund, Outstanding Community Service Award, Regional Transportation Authority, South Central Indiana Council for the Aging & Aged Inc. Tri-County Health Coalition Inc., Indiana Real Estate License, Public Housing Manager Certification, National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials, Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Southern Indiana, Served on Spring Hill Vision Committee, Served on Board of Directors, Life Span Resources, Served on Urban Emphasis Task Force, Lincoln Heritage Council, Boy Scouts of America, Served on the City of Jeffersonville Human Relations Commission, Served on the Clark County Welfare Reform Task Force, Served on the Board of Directors Life Spring Mental Health Services, Inc,. DHUD Properties, Served on Board of Greater Clark County School Educational Foundation, Served on Board of City of Jeffersonville Urban Enterprise Zone and Served on the Board of Jeffersonville Housing Services, Bates, Brother, Bumbles,CA, Daddie, Pawpaw, Popsicle and Scotty were some of the endearing titles bestowed upon Phillip. He was kind and a loving partner to his wife as well as an amazing brother, uncle, father, and grandfather. He will be truly missed by all the lives he has touched. LOVEYOU3!
