In Loving Memory of Neal O’Rea May 13, 1957 – June 22, 2026 Neal O’Rea was born on May 13, 1957, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the son of Edward I. O’Rea,Sr. and Beulah M. Pickett O’Rea, who instilled in him the values of faith, family, hard work, and service to others. Neal graduated from Central High School and continued his education at the University of Louisville earning a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Even as a teenager, he knew his calling was broadcasting. While still in high school, he earned his FCC broadcasting license and began what would become a legendary career at WLOU Radio. Neal “Super Neal” O’Rea became a monumental figure during WLOU’s Golden Era of R&B and Soul. Armed with his signature high-energy, smooth-talking delivery, he earned the nickname “Super Neal”. The tradition of excellence and service to the Black community was brought to the forefront by his legendary on-air personality. He quickly became one of Louisville’s most influential community tastemakers. His programs introduced listeners to the defining sounds of the era, featuring the latest music from Motown, Stax, and Atlantic Records while highlighting legendary artists such as The Commodores, The O’Jays, Earth, Wind & Fire, and many others whose music became the soundtrack of a generation. Neal O’Rea was more than a radio broadcaster. Neal understood the power of music and conversation to unite people, and celebrate culture. His unmistakable voice became a trusted companion throughout Louisville, making WLOU more than a radio station—it became a gathering place for generations of listeners. Although opportunities presented themselves beyond Louisville, Neal remained deeply committed to the city that raised him. He believed in Louisville, loved its people, and proudly represented his hometown throughout his career. When Neal’s broadcasting career came to a close, he built a respected career in the electrical field, working with Payne Electric and later retiring with the state of Kentucky. Neal was known for his professionalism, dependability, and strong work ethic. Whether behind the microphone or rocking a toolbelt, Neal approached every role with pride, excellence, and dedication. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Neal’s greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband to Sheila L. O’Rea, a loving father, a proud grandfather, a caring brother, uncle, cousin, and a loyal friend. He possessed an extraordinary ability to make everyone laugh and feel welcome. Whether sharing a story, offering words of encouragement, or simply listening, Neal had a gift for making people feel seen, heard, and appreciated. Neal was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Edward I. O’Rea, Sr. and Beulah M. Pickett O’Rea; his son, Aaron Mason; his brothers, Eric O’Rea and Edward I O’Rea, Jr.; and his sisters, Gail R. O’Rea and Shelia A. LeGrande. Neal O’Rea leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Sheila L. O’Rea; his loving children, Eric Mason, Ebony O’Rea, Jasmine Pennic (Fred), Neal Talbott, Britteney Mason, and Christopher O’Rea; his sisters Beverly Brown, Flora Campbell (Eddie), and Karen Howard (Amos), and his treasured grandchildren, Angel Mason, Eriss Mason, Makel Johnson, Mia O’Rea, Jaden Riles, Neal O’Rea III, Diyari Jackson, Romell O’Rea, Carter O’Rea, Ce’Kiya Lacy, and Christopher O’Rea, Jr.; He will be missed by a mother-in-law, a step-mother, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, lifelong friends, and former colleagues. The family extends sincere appreciation to everyone who has offered prayers, comforting words, acts of kindness, and unwavering support during this time of bereavement. Porter & Sons-Southeast Funeral Home, 4501 Bardstown Rd. with the Funeral Services to follow at 12 noon. Burial will be in Crosswater Gardens Cemetery.
