Sandra Lee Harris

Sandra Lee (Washington) Harris was born on May 13, 1947, in New York City. She was the oldest of three children. During Sandy’s formative years, she lived in Summerville, S.C., with her mother, Camille Washington. She enjoyed her time in Summerville and loved visiting Myrtle Beach. She went on to attend Alabama State University and was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta, Sorority, Inc. After graduating from ASU, she went to graduate school at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. It was here that she eventually met the love of her life, Tom, and they wed in 1992. Sandy was a teacher at Jefferson County Public Schools for 30 years. She taught at Wellington Elementary School, where she met lifelong friends whom she continued to meet up with monthly for lunch until she became ill. She also taught at Audubon Traditional Elementary, from which she retired. Not one to stay idle for too long, she served as the Uniserv Director of the Jefferson County Teachers Association for 12 years, until she retired. Upon her retirement, she received the Friend of Education award and was also a recipient of the Black Achievers Award and a member of the National Education Association. Sandy was a loving and caring woman who was always willing to lend a helping hand and care for others. Whether it was caring for relatives who took ill or purchasing supplies and clothing for her students in need out of her pocket. She will be remembered for her generosity and for being a good friend. Her hobbies included spending time with her grandchildren, whom she loved immensely, spending time at the beach, and eating ice cream. Sandy was an advocate for fairness and equality and not one to back down from a challenge. When required, she could be as vibrant and fiery as her favorite color, red. On Wednesday, April 10, 2024, Sandy was called home to be with her Heavenly Father. She leaves to cherish her many memories, her husband, Thomas Harris, her grandchildren, Camille Jackson and Julian Jackson, her great-grandchildren, Charlee Camp and Aleah Jackson, and a host of other family members and friends. Sandy was preceded in death by her mother, Camille Washington, and her son Jack N. Jackson (Jerushia). Visitation with the family will be held from 12pm-1pm, on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at A.D. Porter and Sons Funeral Home- Southeast, 4501 Bardstown Rd., with Memorial Service to follow at 1pm.
